4 kids….Really?

I’m not young by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m not old either.  To give you some perspective I have one who is days away from turning 16 and another who is barely 3 months old.  Yes, they are all by the same wife.  She makes being a Dad for me fun.  But that’s a longer conversation for another day.

Why have another child?

We both were asked this maybe a dozen times.  Why in the world would you choose to have 4 kids?  Now, most of the time it was a very benign passing comment from a friend.  But the meaning is all the same.

Why?

Why I wanted to have one more child is probably best explained in a real-world example.  If your home is like ours, when your kids are young they come and ask you to read a book in bed with them or just even lay down with them as they go to sleep.  For all the new parents out there, these are some golden years.

But, there will come a day when it just stops…

It will leave your life in the most subtle of ways.  One day you’re being asked to come to tuck them in, and then poof…it just stops.

I love being a Dad for all kinds of reasons, but this might be my number one reason.  This time with your child is so special and yet so fleeting.  It is this perfect sweet spot, where you kid still idolizes you and they just want to be around you.

I hate to say it’s like an addiction, but once you truly feel the warmth of a young child’s love and admiration it will change you forever.  You will always wonder, “when did my kid become so old?”  One thing I know for certain, they are never too old for a hug!

So, in a way having another child might seem like a type of vanity, but it’s much more than that.  It is so rewarding and I desperately wanted to experience that young innocence one more time.  Before it’s gone forever for me as their Dad, I just wanted one more shot.
